Biography

Professor David StJohn is a graduate of the University of Queensland where he received both a BSc(Hons) and PhD in Physical Metallurgy. From 1994 he has held a Chair in Solidification Technology at the University of Queensland and was also Research Program Leader for the Cooperative Research Centre for Cast Metals Manufacturing (CAST). He was appointed CEO of CAST in August 2002 and in 2005 the CAST Cooperative Research Centre won a third round of funding under the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres Programme. He recently successfully led a bid for the first Defence Future Capability Technology Centre (modelled on the CRC Programme) in the area of materials science. He is also President of Materials Australia.

Prof StJohn has an international reputation for research on light alloys. He and colleagues were awarded the American Society of Metals 2006 Henry Marion Howe Medal for the best paper published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions. He has authored and co-authored over 250 publications and is currently on the editorial committee of the International Journal of Cast Metals Research. He has a long track record of successfully working with industry on collaborative research programs. Prof StJohn has a strong personal and strategic desire to pursue new scientific knowledge that underpins future technology developments thereby assisting industry to be, or remain, competitive in today’s challenging global environment.
