| I am pleased to announce the 11 successful proposals to establish new ARC Centres of Excellence in 2005, with Australian Government funding of $122 million over the next five years. |
| The new ARC Centres of Excellence will be led by Australian researchers who are at the forefront of internationally significant discoveries in their fields of research. |
| The Centres will support university-based researchers in Australia establishing extensive national and international research networks involving partners in other universities, research institutes and companies. |
| Partner organisations have pledged to contribute $71 million to support the work of the Centres. |
| A major objective of the ARC Centres of Excellence is to enhance the scale and focus of research that can contribute to the Government’s National Research Priorities. All of the new Centres will undertake research in areas of priority. |
| The new ARC Centres of Excellence represent a major investment by the Howard Government in Australia’s future prosperity and well-being and are expected to deliver lasting benefits to the community through research that includes: |
| locating new ore deposits to underpin future growth in Australia’s minerals industry; |
| developing higher-yielding and more nutritious plants that can withstand environmental stresses such as drought; |
| improving the diagnosis and treatment of age-related blinding diseases; |
| developing ecologically sustainable management practices for the Great Barrier Reef; |
| designing light metals with new and enhanced properties; and |
| developing novel electromaterials for harvesting and storing energy. |
| The ARC Centres of Excellence are a vital part of the Australian Government’s $8.3 billion innovation action plan, Backing Australia’s Ability, and are funded under the Australian Research Council’s National Competitive Grants Program. |
