| Australian Research Council (ARC) Chief Executive Officer, Professor Margaret Sheil, today announced that all 11 ARC Centres of Excellence funded from 2005 will receive additional funding totaling $82.25 million over three and a half years from July 2010. |
| “ARC Centres of Excellence concentrate expertise and encourage collaboration amongst high-quality researchers to maintain and develop Australia's international standing in research areas of national priority,” Professor Sheil said. |
| “In 2005, the ARC provided funding of $24.4 million, under the National Competitive Grants Program, to establish 11 ARC Centres of Excellence. |
| “In 2008, all 11 Centres were reviewed; taking into account their progress to date and their plans and strategies for the future should they receive an extension of ARC funding. |
| “The Centres have shown significant progress and achievement and I am pleased to say that the ARC is extending their funding to a total of $82.25 million over three and a half years from July 2010. |
| “The results of the review really show the high-calibre of Australian research and researchers. |
| “This includes research that: shows the benefit of intact fish populations in successfully managing the resilience of tropical coral reefs; gives us an understanding of how free radicals affect cultural materials; and has made advances in the prediction of retinal disease.” |
