D Project D4: Wear resistant light alloys
Project Leader: Professor Peter Hodgson - Deakin University
Staff/students
Development of light alloys with structurally or chemically modified surfaces – or a combination of both structural and chemical modification. These alloys will have graded properties designed such that the surface behaves superior to the bulk for specific properties, in this case wear resistance.
Hodgson, Peter
Experimental investigations into the sliding wear and friction properties of light alloy surfaces will be aided by the use of a Pin-on-Disc Tester capable of both room temperature and high temperature testing. This equipment also allows a wide range of load and lubrication and sliding velocity conditions. Other wear measurement systems are under development.
This project will develop the expertise in theory and practice of application and assessment of structural and chemical surface modification as applied to light alloy substrates. This may allow the identification of new methodologies, substrate – surface alloying element combinations and processes for the development of light alloy materials with superior properties in regards to wear resistance.
