D Project D5: Gradient structures
Project Leader: Dr. Nick Birbilis - Monash University
Staff/students
Development of light alloys with structurally or chemically modified surfaces – or a combination of both structural and chemical modification. These alloys will have graded properties designed such that the surface behaves superior to the bulk for specific properties, in this case we will largely focus upon corrosion resistance.
Birbilis, Nick
Experimental investigations into the corrosion properties of modified light alloy surfaces will be aided by a combination of detailed electrochemical analysis, microscopy (optical and electron), and scanning probe microscopy techniques.
This project will develop the expertise in fundamental effects of structural (and chemical) surface modification as applied to light alloy substrates. This may allow the identification of new methodologies, substrate – surface alloying element combinations and processes for the development of light alloy materials with superior properties in regards to corrosion resistance.
